As a kid I remember the scenery of Monument Valley appearing in all kinds of westerns. Once there, you could easily imagine John Wayne riding past with the music of Ennio Morricone playing in the background.
We visited Monument Valley in the dead of winter which ended up having two benefits. First, it really wasn't that cold having arrived from Saskatchewan just a few days earlier and second, we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves.
The thing I didn't expect was the scale of these grand geological formations. They were way larger than I had anticipated.
You enter the site though a gate and then you are free to drive the roads in, out and all about the valley. It was winter so the days were short, but we managed to spend sunrise to sunset touring around and taking the odd walk. The photo opportunities were seemingly endless and it was well worth the journey.
